Point Boro Prepares For First Road Game at Monmouth Regional

Jim Rosa | September 20, 2018

Two weeks of the High School football season are now behind us and we have learned quite a bit about the Point Boro football team. It was a tough home opener as the Point Boro defense allowed 42 points in a loss to Manasquan. However, the team rebounded nicely last week giving up only 13 points in a divisional victory at Al Saner Field. Point Boro will face another divisional opponent as they travel to Monmouth Regional for a Saturday afternoon Liberty Division matchup. It should be another exciting game as the Panthers look to move over the .500 mark for the first time this season. Here is what to keep in mind as the team prepares to take the field in game three.

Point Boro has played quite well on the offensive side of the ball averaging 34 points per game over their first two games. The offensive line has certainly played great with four new linemen outside of Scott Franceschini who started last year as a junior.

Senior Kyle Komantisky explained how he has been impressed with the line this season. “The line has been great. The new guys stepped right in with only one returner from last year and they quickly adapted to the new plays,” Komanitsky said.

Garrett Romer also appears to be heading for a breakout year in his first season as Point Boro QB. In last Friday’s victory over Colts Neck, Romer rushed for 212 yards and finished with 5 TDs on the evening . Bobby Cooper and Kyle Komanitsky have also played important roles in the offense the last two weeks. Cooper rushed for 118 yards in last Friday’s win which included a 71 yard TD run. The team will be looking to get off to a fast start once again this week which has been a strength of Boro so far this season. In each game this season, the Panthers have scored on their first possession.

The Panthers, however, know that each week will present a new challenge for them. “We need to focus on getting the ball to the outside,” Bobby Cooper said. “After seeing what we did to Colts Neck, Monmouth will be keying in on the inside run,” Cooper explained. Bobby also talked about the offensive line and their play which has helped the backs. “The line has played great all season,” Cooper mentioned. “They have opened up huge holes for Garrett and I. It really helps to make things easier on the field,” Cooper added.“

The Point Boro defense will also look to continue playing well as they go on the road for the first time this season .“The ability to play sound defense last week gave us a lot of confidence,” Cooper mentioned. “It gives us a ton of confidence knowing that once we stop the ball our offense can go out and score some points, ”Cooper explained. Kyle Komanitsky also talked about how his team's defense can execute this week.“ The challenge this week will be stopping the pass because Monmouth is big on the passing game. We know we just have to be focused and locked in on every play,” Komanitsky said.

“Last week it was really important for us to stop the run,” Cornerback Jake Magley said. “This week we know that we will have to stop the passing game and really lock down on the receivers,” Magley explained when asked about the challenges that will be presented to the Panther defense this week.

The team knows that as long as they play as a team they will be in a good position to come away with plenty more wins this season. “Last week reassured us of what we can do when we put everything together,” Garrett Romer said. “We know we just have to take it week by week and focus on who we have in front of us so we can get the win.”
